Friday sanity break
Posted on June 12th, 2010
All in all, it wasn’t that bad of a week, even if I did kick it off in the ER (yay, morphine!). But let’s face it, by Friday, I need TIME AWAY FROM MY CHILD. When my husband came home this afternoon, I threw on real clothes, some mascara (this was probably the first day I didn’t actually put makeup on since I started my SAHM gig), and hit the streets.
And I went where I usually go these days: world’s best new/used bookstore that occupies a city block (yeah, I don’t really want to out myself, but if you know the place, it’s easy to figure out). My good luck that I live a ten minute walk away, and early enough on a Friday evening, it’s not too hard to dodge the hipsters spilling out of the martini bars along the way. (They get pretty thick on the ground the later it gets. And oh, they are so annoying, especially when they get drunk and yell and hoot and carry on at 1 AM. Yes, suburban DBs, people actually LIVE HERE.)
Back to the bookstore: It was so relaxing. The last time I was in there, I had P, and she was all over the place (she learned to climb ladders there – not making this up) and she made me spend a good 45 minutes in the dinosaur/volcano section. Today, I went where I wanted! I hung out in the history of science! And British history! Then child development! And I could actually browse without having random people informing me that my child is doing laps around the aisles. (My favorite from a concerned citizen: “Is that your child?” Answer: “About ten percent of the time. The rest of the time, she’s her own person.” Unspoken: “Jackass. At least she says ‘excuse me’ when she runs past you.”)
Also, prices were better than normal, or I was just lucky. Four books, $40. (One was $4!)
I even had the gumption to go into Sur La Table, to pick up some dinosaur cookie cutters before I picked up some take out and headed home. I think P and I have sugar cookies in our future…next week.

aww! sounds like you deserved some “me” time! There’s nothing like a solitary trip to the mall or bookstore to just do WHATEVER THE HECK YOU WANT! right?
I am sooo lucky to live close to this bookstore! But it’s dangerous – I was back on Saturday.
