Pea has known about the sperm and egg thing for a while, because she’s interested in biology. We haven’t gone into specifics, but she knows that the Daddy makes sperm and the Mommy makes the egg, and that mammal babies grow inside their mom (except for platypus babies). I’m trying to follow the guidance from my child psychology class (many years ago) about at this age, you should just answer the question that’s before you. And that’s where we’re at.

Today at Target, we see an adorable baby being held by her father. Adorable hat. I said, “Oh, Pea, look at the cute new baby!”

Pea took one look at the father and said, “You made the sperm for that baby.”

Next: “My dad made the sperm for me. And my mom made the egg.”

Then it turned into a song. “Daddy  made the sperm, Mama made the egg.” Over and over again. In a sing-song, schoolyard sort of way.

I kept waiting for the floor to swallow me up, but…no. But when the man with the baby saw us a few minutes later, he gave us a very wide berth.
