I said it’s ok, but I think it depends on time of day. If it’s bedtime, especially if the child has a busy day in store, I think it’s fine because the getting a good night’s sleep and not getting over-tired is good for kids too. Every now and again is not going to cause liver toxicity.
That’s never come up for us, only because my daughter’s allergies are so bad that she takes 2-4 allergy medicines per day, depending on what’s in the air for the season. So I don’t think occasional Benadryl is all that bad!
I said it depends, although I could have also said maybe. I could imagine doing it when the lack of sleep has become a bigger problem than taking allergy medicine. Though, I’ve also read that Benadryl makes some kids hyper, so it might be worth trying a trial run sometime! (Of course, having no kids, this is TOTALLY hypothetical. I do know someone whose mom used to give him Ny-Quil on the nights she was having a party, though.)
I don’t have strong feelings about it, but it often comes up as a contentious issue, so I was curious what an unscientific sampling of people thought.
My kid has eczema enough that she gets Benedryl from time to time, but the times I’ve given it to her during the day were miserable: she became a crabby mess. I know some parents swear it makes flying with kids easier, but I’m pretty sure Pea would make the entire airplane suffer.
I had horrible insomnia as a child, and given that Benedryl is such a benign medication, I wonder if it would have been helpful. (You can get acclimated, though, or at least I do. I take it so often for allergies that I can kick back 100 mg, and I won’t get the slightest bit drowsy.)
