It gets better, much better

Posted on April 15th, 2012

Recently I went back and read some of my old posts, from when Pea was 2 and 3, like when she had a tantrum that brought my next-door neighbor over in a bathrobe, or when she broke my African violet pots. I almost deleted the posts, because they are not representative of my life now — but then I figured, maybe it’ll give someone else hope. That isn’t my kid and hasn’t been in a long time. It gets better. It gets so much better. Pea is sweet, generous, funny (so funny!), and dramatic. Oh, I know I’m in for trouble later. I’ll probably regret this post someday, too, for the hubris involved. Yes, she’s exasperating. Yes, she’s exhausting. But the good is so…

And on the third day (of antibiotics)

Posted on April 14th, 2012

(Using Apostles’ Creed calculations, anyway.) I woke up and felt almost 100%. Being sick always adjusts my perspective on life. I mean, when else will I feel so happy to breathe out of not one, but two nostrils at the same time? That’s the high life, baby. Sleeping AND breathing at the same time? I’m a rock star. That weird metallic taste in my mouth from the antibiotics? OK. I still hate that part. Yep. I waited two days too long to go in, and paid for it in spades. It’s all good now.

The condescending, vaccine-hating, negligent jackass

Posted on April 12th, 2012

When I was younger, I looked very young. If I was in a situation where women are traditionally treated differently/poorly compared to men, I’d often bring M along to even the situation out. (E.g., negotiating for a new car. I would do the talking, but M was there to be the guy. One car salesman looked at M the whole time during the negotiations; it was like I wasn’t even there. I was 21 and looked 15.) Time passed. I went to law school. I aged. I got used to being treated — mostly — as an equal. I got used to being treated with hostility. But condescension? Not very often, and whenever it did happen, I was fine with it, because I’d use…

Spring Outing

Posted on April 11th, 2012

Being sick is no excuse for not getting out of doors, at least not in this household. Also, there is the child-bouncing-off-the-walls problem that occurs daily around 1 PM. So we hied ourselves to the Rhododendron Gardens, where Pea submitted with great protest to pictures. Great. Protest. We did get a smile, finally. And there were ducks and geese to feed (along with a juvenile Red-winged Blackbird and some brave song sparrows), so she was a happy girl. Also, duck behavior around breeding season is really quite amusing. I took footage of two drakes yapping at each other for a good five minutes. I have no idea what it was about, except it reminded me of gaming nerds fighting about RPG rules interpretation.

Breaking News (not really)

Posted on April 11th, 2012

This is more of a placeholder, really. I’m still sick. My body likes to turn every cold/allergy season into a sinus infection: I’m just lucky that way. Pea has gotten her first waitlist from the charter lottery (28 of 186 on the waitlist, of over 300 applicants for 13 spots). Four more schools to go.  Odds are about the same, so… I am terrified I will be the homeschooling Attorney at Large next year. Or the redshirting-my-kid Attorney At Large next year. Although, on reflection, I already kind of am the homeschooling Attorney at Large, and it is not an easy gig. This makes me ever so hopeful that M finds a job a long way away from the Portland Public School system, as…

MILP Roundup No. 247: the 247th Litigating Mamas!

Posted on April 9th, 2012

I was going to do a virus theme for the 247th Edition of the Mothers in the Legal Profession Roundup (it sounds like a military unit: the 247th Litigating Mamas!), but decided…no. I’m tired of this cold and viruses in general. Then I was going to be clever and use lines from Easter hymns, but I’ve already done that. My creativity exhausted, we are themeless. Mea culpa. AA wins her first case! andTHEN contemplates outlying. Attorney Work Product celebrates another victory. But I do have a law degree is flying high. Cee will have some good news to share! Cowgirl in the City is dreaming. Cristy is at the hospital. In a Minute has a dilemma. Izzy has a quiet Easter. LC has had…

I’m it again! (A Writing Meme)

Posted on April 7th, 2012

I’ve been tagged with another meme. And since I wasn’t sure what I was going to do until tomorrow’s MILP roundup, hooray! I have a blog topic! This one is Lucky Seven, and there are rules, of course: 1. Go to page  7 or 77 in your current manuscript 2. Go to line 7 3. Copy down the next seven lines as they are – no cheating 4. Tag 7 other authors. 5. Post the lines on your blog. (The lawyer in me would appreciate more specific language for Number 3. Do you start with line 7 or 77, or with 8 or 78? I’m guessing the spirit of the rule is actually 7, so I’ll go there. I know a lawyer who litigated…

Channelling Mr. Darcy

Posted on April 5th, 2012

Regular readers know we live on one income: we have a budget and dining out is a luxury. This is tough, because 1) I like eating out and 2) I hate cooking. Once every two weeks (coinciding with payday), I take Pea out to breakfast or lunch, just the two of us. It’s usually combined with several errands in the neighborhood we used to live in. Typically I let Pea choose, but today, because of time constraints, we only had once choice. Which was fine, because I’d been wanting to go. I like this restaurant. I like the people who work in it. I’ve seen the place hopping and I’ve seen the place slow, and I’ve always had great service and good food. Here’s…

Let there be light: A Sunshine Award

Posted on April 4th, 2012

My friend Meggan Connors (whose book you should buy) has been out of the country on a secret mission for a three letter agency, because otherwise she would never have nominated me for the Sunshine Award — but so she has. And so I will now attempt to be sunshiney. And look! A Gerber daisy! What is happier than that? The rules: Include the award logo in your post or in your blog; Answer 10 questions about yourself; Nominate 10-12 other fabulous bloggers; Link your nominees to the post and comment on their blog, letting them know they are nominated; and Share the love and link the person who nominated you. And yes, I know this is the 21st century equivalent of a chain…

…and then we were burgled.

Posted on April 3rd, 2012

It happened sometime last week, when I was busy trying hard not to lose my shit. Someone broke into the downstairs storage area and went through about six storage units, including ours. We’re lucky. The stuff they took isn’t intensely personal, like my poor neighbor who lost family photos and mementos. But they took two of the best pieces of our luggage. They may have taken Pea’s stroller. (I really can’t remember if it was further back in the unit or not.) Since we had our dishwasher and broken-down boxes blocking access to most of the unit, they couldn’t go far — they left our camping gear intact and put Pea’s old car seat in the middle of the room. I really don’t know…
