Local news: keeping it weird

Posted on May 31st, 2012

Today has been a weird day. It started out ordinarily enough: it’s payday, so I paid bills and dealt with home business. I let Pea skip worksheets (we have been doing them daily) and dance practice, and we went for sushi. That was delightful, because I’d forgotten one of the servers had put aside some of her daughter’s things she’d outgrown (beads, a new beanie baby, that sort of thing) for Pea, who was completely thrilled. The owner brought Pea mochi for dessert, and it was a good experience. We walked out feeling awesome. (Contrast this to what happened at our other standby payday place: I miss you, Byways, but given that I mailed my post to your corporate address and still never heard…

Baby’s First Existential Crisis

Posted on May 29th, 2012

She came in my office last night while I was writing and said, “Mom, I’m feeling a little bit sad about something.” Since she’d said that she didn’t want to grow up a few minutes earlier, I asked, “Is it about growing up?” She nodded. “I don’t want to grow up.” I pulled her onto my lap. “That’s fine with me.” “I don’t want to be five. And I don’t want to die.” “I know.” She looks up and fixes me with a clear stare. “I’m not dying.” “No, not now. Not for a long time.” “I just want to stay four.” “OK. I think you’ll get bored if you don’t grow up, but it’s fine with us.” “I don’t want to die.” “Daddy…

MILP Roundup No. 254

Posted on May 28th, 2012

The Weekly Mothers In the Legal Profession Roundup is hosted on a rotating basis at the Butterflyfish, PT Law Mom, Attorney at Large, Attorney Work Product, Today Advocating Tomorrow, The Reluctant Grownup, and Magic Cookie blogs. Alice had the weekend from hell. Associate Girl gets to wear a bikini. But I do have a law degree goes OUT OUT. Butterflyfish enjoys the virtual MILP community. Cowgirl in the City’s little buckaroo has swimming lessons. (So. Cute.) CM had a great weekend (last weekend — hopefully this one was good, too). CP has been crazy busy. Dinei suggests law jobs for good. Frenchie celebrates a milestone for Mia. GoogieBaba shows off her Pentecost red. Izzy is sick. (My sympathies!) JulietCap wonders about nudity. Kate experiences the pain of class…

Meet the neighbors

Posted on May 23rd, 2012

We live in a townhouse. On either side of us are single, older women. Most of the people who live in these condos are older, which is good — and bad. I was hoping for some surrogate grandparents for Pea, but no dice. On one side, we have a lady who isn’t here very often, who is quiet and nice. I like her. We were both worried about making too much noise for the other, and it turns out neither of us can hear the other. And we both have pianos! So there’s that. On the other, we have a woman that we’ll call Batty. She’s…off. She’s around 70 years old (I guess) and is fine with Gman. In fact, she really likes Gman.…

My little flirt

Posted on May 22nd, 2012

Pea loves men. I’ve talked about it before. At length. Over and over. I used to find it a lot more charming than I do now, because, well, it’s been going on a while and it’s just getting worse. She introduces herself to every male in a twenty foot radius, no matter where we are. She flirts. She does her dance steps. She compliments. She is very charming. And I feel guilty for saying it, but – It is really annoying! I don’t like being her wingman! And I don’t want to have to keep pulling my daughter off of random strangers (who are, fortunately, very good-natured about the whole thing). I don’t want to be the person who has to take the trouble…

The dearth of posts explained

Posted on May 20th, 2012

Just as an FYI: when I get to the place where I’m not even posting pictures, it means I’m in a funk. This time, the funk has been exhaustion (from husband sick nearly two full weeks + my not-quite-as-strong illness), emotional exhaustion (reserves? what reserves?) to professional exhaustion (when I get to the place where I hate the novel, it means I am wiped out, and the editing assignments I’ve been given…oh, man). So I’ve been basically…caving. Playing Civ IV, cleaning, rearranging furniture, taxiing people to various appointments (including some of my own), shopping (within reasonable limits) and reading. Lots of reading. Today I’d reached my limit. Completely. I had awful back pain, everything made me want to cry, and I just wanted to…

The secret to dealing with clients

Posted on May 17th, 2012

I know I’ve been hard on clients in past posts. And yes, many clients are difficult. It’s the nature of practice (or of any job that requires extended contact with the public). But there is one thing that, if you can hold it in your head most of the time, will help you deal with even your worst clients. It’s your privilege to assist them with their legal matters. Your privilege, not theirs. You should be honored to accept the fiduciary duty that comes with representation. You. Not them. In the eyes of most clients, you hold the keys to the courthouse. You practice legal alchemy and can turn pleading lead into judgment gold. (Which is not to say that after the case is…

Blood, (boob) sweat, and (allergy) tears

Posted on May 14th, 2012

Lest anyone fear, I survived mother’s day. And had a good time of it, too, on a picnic with friends. And then my friend RGP made me cry. In a good way. Now? It’s hot. Pea’s word of the day is “sweltering.” She is “sweltering in her clothes.” Her hair, she says, is sweating and it’s getting into her blood and making her hot. (I’ll keep the secret of boob sweat from her for a few more years.) Gman? Still sick. We took him to the doctor today and yes, it’s been professionally confirmed that he is sick. He’s on sulfa and steroid nose spray, and oh, lots of sleeping. I have been transcribing Dearest Maude letters like crazy (they’re currently scheduled out through…

Poor Pitiful Pearl

Posted on May 12th, 2012

So. I hate Mother’s Day. I want it to be over. (I’m getting pretty high in the Google rankings for “i hate mother’s day,” too.) I alternate between being weepy and feeling sorry for myself and feeling angry. Not my favorite emotional states. My husband is SICK. Like has done nothing but sleep for three days sick. Like chugging Nyquil every four hours-sick. Like I have to go to the store and go past all the Mother’s Day displays and not cry to get the Nyquil-sick. This comes on the end of Pea being SICK. Like endless rivulets of snot sick (something I haven’t seen from her in a long time) and grouchy and easily exhausted sick. So far, I am not sick. (I…
