Ball of Confusion
Posted on October 10th, 2012
I stabbed the fleshy part of my left hand this morning with a serrated steak knife, which feels just as good as you might think. (Am typing one-handed, so apologies to everyone I owe email.)
After leaving urgent care with stitches and bandages, I checked email and found this gem.
In almost 10 years of blogging, it is my first troll! I had started to think this day would never come. And I know I shouldn’t feed trolls, but since this is my first and the troll made a value judgment about Pea, how could I not?
A new comment on the post “Nope. It’s not Pea.” is waiting for your approval

Have you ever thought that the problem is you? You are so smug and think that you are always in the right and everyone else is just inconsiderate and stupid. I’m sure you’re passing this smug attitude onto your child. I’m not sure why everything is such a confrontation for you.
The answer is confusion. If I am so smug and think everyone else is stupid, wouldn’t I impute that to a random commenter, too? Was I supposed to have a eureka moment? Also, who wastes time reading and commenting on a blog by someone they find annoying?
Apparently, I’m not quite smart enough. But…thanks for being my first troll, Maggie Snow. Cheers!

How have you made it this far without a troll???
I have no idea! I’ve had one person make a quasi-nasty statement and one person make some rambling and crazy statements, but no true trolls until now. Maybe my smug attitude put them off?
Hold on. I’m coming into this without context (as trolls are wont to do) because I’m coming from Twitter as opposed to the regular blog readership. But I just want to point out that there’s a difference between being a troll and being an asshole. Unless Ms. Snow is being snarky at a level I’m failing to comprehend, you might not be able to claim your first troll sighting just yet. But of course, I’m new here, so I’ll just hang up and listen.

Oh, shoot. I didn’t know there was a difference! If motive is the distinguishing characteristic, maybe she’ll write back and let us know her mental state. (I could hazard a guess, but…)
Huh. I’m on the fence on this one. Troll or asshole? There are subtle differences; I’m just not sure which side of the line this one falls.
And how did you go this long without the mean comments? I think I went all of three weeks before I was called “an ugly, fat fraud.” Sweet!
I guess I just got lucky. Possibly my smugness is a deterrent?
