Don’t be that guy!

A little while back I gave myself permission to be a slacker until Pea starts school. Because I’m contrary, I’ve had more ideas, I’ve read (or wanted to read) more, and I’ve written (and/or outlined) more than I have almost all summer. Go figure.
As for reading: I’m reading a biography of Washington Irving (M keeps thinking it’s George Washington Carver, which has led to some funny, if confusing, exchanges), among other things. I’m currently waiting for three gratis books to arrive for (it should go without saying, but…) unbiased reviews. Two are through Red Letter Reads (which is made up of a great, diverse group of readers); one is from a book publicist who either forgot to send the book or sent it elsewhere. Which…really doesn’t make me think well of the publicist or, sadly, the author, who is not at fault but who will be associated in my mind with flakiness from this point forward.
A small rant, about authors, while I’m at it. I’m on Goodreads. I like Goodreads, because I see what my friends are reading, and given how busy people are, I’m not always able to have conversations with them about what they’re reading. I love their reviews and learning about books I wouldn’t have, otherwise.
I’m also very open in the people I friend on Goodreads, because it’s like a book party with a champagne flute that never runs dry. I’ve had fun conversations–again, with people I wouldn’t have met, otherwise. (Damn, I love the magic gray box that lets me chat with people all over the world. If we’re talking about books, I’m that much happier.)
Recently, an author–who was friends with some of my GR friends–added me. I accepted the friendship. A day or two passed, and I was spammed with his book promo info.
Um, no. That’s not how you do social media. Don’t tweet about your damned books (more than, say, once every so often), don’t endlessly blog about your damned books, and for the love of all that is unholy, do not spam my Goodreads inbox with your damned books.
I quickly unfriended him, but still kept getting spam about his damned book. I might have been curious to check it out, but now he’s on my “will never, ever buy” list.
Authors, please, please, please: don’t be that guy.
