The Attorney at Large

Posted on May 21st, 2013

I’ve pulled myself out of last week’s abyss and have become productive again. (Go, Protestant work ethic, go. This is how I measure my worth, when I’m not measuring it by the state of my house, my age, education, or the behavior of my child in public situations.) Even though sequestration means I won’t have access to some of the archived materials I need, the public domain, Google books, Powell’s, and various digitization projects mean I’ve got enough primary and secondary material to work with until someone in federal governance decides to spend money on public services again. The novel I should be pitching? I’m not. It’s done, as much as it’s going to be done before an editor works on it. I need…

Timing is everything

The Attorney at Large

Posted on May 15th, 2013

This morning, rather early, M woke me up with 1) the last Pepsi MAX in the house and 2) news that someone tried to use my credit card (well, a facsimile thereof) at a Wal-Mart. The good news is the bank caught the fraud straight away (no, I don’t shop at Wal-Mart, not even going to a different state to do it), and the bad actors did not get their cheaply made goods on our dime. The other good news is that particular account is running on fumes until payday. Even if the fraud folks hadn’t caught the error, well, yay for being broke. Now, the neurotic and OCD part of my brain that can’t stand an unsolved mystery? Going nuts over how this…

Identity Crisis: Lawyer, writer, teacher?

Posted on April 17th, 2013

In a couple of months, it will be three years since I worked full-time as an attorney. Three years. I keep up with my CLEs. I pay my bar dues. (But not my $3500 malpractice dues–I’m exempt–and no, that’s not a typo. It’s mandatory in Oregon, and you can’t shop around). I still think like a lawyer (that really is a thing). I volunteer for legal organizations. I even applied to work as a lawyer recently (and almost got the job). But three years. I recently organized my office and recycled most of my big books of law, because if I were to go back into my field, they’d need to be redone, anyway. I recycled my 2010 West court rules.  (I still keep…

Hither and Thither

Posted on April 3rd, 2013

The mast had to come down. As sad as this was, watching how easily M dismantled the thing and lowered 30′ of metal pipe with an antenna on top with one piece of rope was pretty fucking amazing. He took it all in stride and has announced he has another plan. I really, really love Twice. (If you sign up with that link and buy something, you’ll get a $10 credit and so will I. So go thither!) In other exciting news, my jaw has been out of alignment for five days. This, by the way, hurts like a SOB. Also, I miss chewy food. Pea, on seeing me in a particular skirt, “That looks great! And when it shrinks, I can wear it!”…

Migraines, bribery, and alpaca

Posted on March 1st, 2013

This week: Migraines and back pain. A lot of migraines and back pain. Complete inability to go to bed at a decent hour. It’s not insomnia; it’s me refusing to go to bed. Must…write…all…the…things… Except migraines make that tough. Fights to get Pea to school on time. Bribery to get Pea to school on time. (More successful! A smoothie goes a long way.) Sitting in coffee shops waiting while Pea is in school…with migraines and back pain. Supervising lots of piano practice. (This requires no bribery. She’s very motivated. She also has gone from wanting me on the bench next to her to telling me to sit somewhere else.) Making lots of sushi. Picking my birthday present, an Eileen Fisher suri/baby alpaca cardigan/coat. (Hey,…

The day my youth went to the moon

Posted on February 21st, 2013

A long time ago, in an AP Composition class far, far away, I was assigned a partner for a writing assignment in which we had to write what we thought the other would be doing in twenty or thirty years. I can’t remember what I wrote for my partner. She and I had previously bonded over our mutual love for Camper Van Beethoven. She predicted I’d be an impoverished writer living in New York City in a hole in the wall apartment. She meant it well and was surprised I was offended, but in my teenaged fantasy, I sure as hell wasn’t going to be impoverished. In retrospect, she got most of it right. I’m poor. I’m not sure this condo is a hole…

The AAL Guide to Distracting Notifications, or how I reclaimed my sanity from electronic devices

Posted on February 6th, 2013

There isn’t a sound in the world that pisses me off more than a ringing phone, or a light that makes me angrier than a flashing red “voicemail” alert. If I were forty years older, I’d be an old lady who’d pretend to not understand how her answering machine worked. As much as I love my gadgets, as much as I need them to be productive, I hate them, too. I hate them because if I know there is something outstanding — an email that needs a response, a call that needs to be returned, or even knowing it’s my Words with Friends turn — I am constitutionally incapable of focusing on work until I’ve written the email, made the call, or taken my…

This year and 2013

Posted on December 29th, 2012

This year, I decided I would “get healthy.” To that end, I cooked more, watched what I ate, and lost 22 pounds, despite all the medical weirdness of this year. I have not exercised more, because unless it’s hiking, I pretty much hate exercise. (OK, running, but running by myself is boring.) Still, I want to lose at least 20 more, so that’s on the table for 2013. (If I lose 10 more, I unlock the wonders of my best wardrobe. It’s a powerful incentive!) This year, I read a lot. I set a modest Goodreads goal of 25 books and have read 40-something books. (To brag, I don’t read fluffy fiction. We’re talking mostly 400+ page nonfiction.) In 2013, I want to continue…

Panic attack! (Or: There are no book-selling fairies)

Posted on December 28th, 2012

Whoo! And here I was thinking I’d been doing so well, not having very many of those panic attacks this year. Damn you, 2012, for your five ER visits (three mine), four urgent care visits (two mine), two sets of stitches (it may be three, but only one of those was mine), two cardiac stress tests (one mine, but it was the nuclear version), one “wow, you have crazy weird granulomas in your lungs and we don’t know why so let’s go send you to an oncologist,” one mammogram (obviously mine), and nine prescription drugs monthly (mine). This post is dedicated to all the dumb fucks in the US who think we have the best heath care system in the world. We don’t. I’m…
