I want a do-over (Or: no plan survives contact with my husband’s foot.)

Posted on April 11th, 2013

Today’s plan was for me to have a break. It was going to go like this: Pea to Pre-K (a drop-in day at her preschool). Up, ready, driven and dropped off. This is a big splurge for me, because it costs $65. That is a lot of money in my world. Me to coffee with the woman who did not hire me for the job I’d hoped for. Done. And delightful, because she’s a fabulous person. The only thing I regret about not getting that job is not working with her. Me to lunch with a law classmate to talk smack about Commodore Porter, because how often can I do that? Me to Powell’s, to browse in peace for hours without Pea lying on…

Red alert!

Posted on April 9th, 2013

I hate irrational bad mood days. Yesterday? Great day. Most of today? Great! Items crossed off lists. Errands run. Lessons chauffeured to.  It’s all good, or should be. I have no reason to feel annoyed, unsettled, or angry (excepting, maybe, two books I need for research and could only locate at carefully vetted but far-flung used book stores* are now creeping toward the NW at media mail paces because I was too cheap to splurge on express shipping). I have consumed chocolate. I have had a fresh strawberry shake from Burgerville. What gives with the foul mood? I have no idea. So let me count my blessings. One, two, three…oh! Many thanks those of you who signed up and made your first purchases at…

Inquiring minds want to know

Posted on December 19th, 2012

Almost as much fun as questions for Ask AAL are the ways people get to this blog. Such fun search terms! I hate paper napkins. Me, too. Are Christmas cards passe? I don’t think so, given the lovely cards I’ve received (and sent) this year. Mothers’ day is stupid. Yep. Lavoisier in the Year One. It was a good book. Quiet time art projects I don’t think those exist. My kid only does art projects by continuously narrating every step of the project. If my attention wanes, I’ll be brought back to task with “Hey, MOM! Look!” Should I friend my client on Facebook? No. Do women have to remove hats indoors? No. What should I do if my blood pressure is 150/112? Go…

Bagpipes and Perfume Bonuses and Santa(r)

Posted on November 24th, 2012

Pea and I were downtown today, and it was crazy. The crowds were typical for this time of year, but the street musicians and performers were everywhere. (Sometimes two jammed together on the same corner.) And there were pipes. “Let’s go listen to the pipes,” I said to Pea, who has — and this is the important part — been taking Highland dancing lessons for months. We get to the corner with the piper. I look at Pea… …and she has her hands over her ears. Huh. We have some desensitization to do, I think. So we moved on. I’ve been out of my favorite perfume for a while (money) and had previously only been able to find it at Nordstrom, but on the…

Some perspective

Posted on November 19th, 2012

I’ve turned into the mom who is completely out of countenance because the kid is home from school for a week. I can’t imagine what Christmas break or Spring break or Summer break will do to me. It’s amazing how quickly we adapt. I mean, I was the caretaking parent almost 24/7 for about two years (with some time off for preschool and camp) but…I’ve gotten used to those mornings of productivity. Still, I’m doing OK. Today was a social day (and also a “gee, I’ll test run hors d’oeuvres” and eat a lot of puff pastry day). Tomorrow is a catch-up-with CLEs day (this is my first reporting period ever where I have taken this long in the year to finish up, because,…

Ball of Confusion

Posted on October 10th, 2012

I stabbed the fleshy part of my left hand this morning with a serrated steak knife, which feels just as good as you might think. (Am typing one-handed, so apologies to everyone I owe email.) After leaving urgent care with stitches and bandages, I checked email and found this gem. In almost 10 years of blogging, it is my first troll! I had started to think this day would never come. And I know I shouldn’t feed trolls, but since this is my first and the troll made a value judgment about Pea, how could I not? A new comment on the post “Nope. It’s not Pea.” is waiting for your approval http://www.attorneyatlarge.us/2012/10/09/nope-its-not-pea/ Author : Maggie Snow (IP: 107.20.220.39 , ec2-107-20-220-39.compute-1.amazonaws.com) E-mail : msnow@gmail.com…

Freaky Friday

Posted on September 21st, 2012

Today is a slightly unusual day. M has a conference, so he had time to go with me to drop off Pea. It made for a slightly less stressed morning routine. It turned into a very silly morning. My morning (if we ignore Pea’s 5:30 “I have to go potty” yelling from her room and the “Then just freaking climb down and go!” and “I can’t! It’s TOO DARK!” hysteria) (re)starts with M’s alarm going off. It plays this: (And yes, it’s this precise version.) For days beforehand, I thought I was dreaming this, that it was some sick and twisted product of my subconscious. I mean, he lived in Germany for years and never managed to learn any German (unless we count “macht…

Stuart Revival

Posted on September 12th, 2012

After looking in the mirror this morning, I had a mild panic. My hair is very curly. It was very uniformly curly this morning. I ran in the bedroom. “M. Be honest. Do I look like Charles II?” M, suddenly wide awake: “WHAT?” Me: “I mean my hair. Does it have a Stuart Restoration thing going on?” M: “No. God, no.” Me: “Whew.” M: “Although I should probably point out that all I really see is a big red blob.” Me: “…”

Murphy’s Law

Posted on July 17th, 2012

The next time you want to sit down to type up a post about just how colossally shitty your day is going? Don’t. Because that may be the point (foreshadowing!) when your husband takes the biggest, sharpest kitchen knife to slice open a watermelon — and, Eagle Scout though he is — somehow manages to cut his finger all the way down to the bone. And then follows a six hour emergency department visit. Booyah. What a Monday.

Local news: keeping it weird

Posted on May 31st, 2012

Today has been a weird day. It started out ordinarily enough: it’s payday, so I paid bills and dealt with home business. I let Pea skip worksheets (we have been doing them daily) and dance practice, and we went for sushi. That was delightful, because I’d forgotten one of the servers had put aside some of her daughter’s things she’d outgrown (beads, a new beanie baby, that sort of thing) for Pea, who was completely thrilled. The owner brought Pea mochi for dessert, and it was a good experience. We walked out feeling awesome. (Contrast this to what happened at our other standby payday place: I miss you, Byways, but given that I mailed my post to your corporate address and still never heard…
